A typical day on the Madeiran trails

Your day begins with a hearty breakfast before leaving your main luggage at the reception. You then set out on the trail with only your daypack. You walk at your own pace, taking the time to admire the landscapes, have a picnic by a waterfall, or photograph the endemic flora. In the late afternoon, you arrive at your next accommodation to find your luggage waiting for you. It's the perfect balance of adventure and comfort.

Practical advice for your hike

When is the best time to go to Madeira?

Thanks to its subtropical climate, Madeira is known as the "island of eternal spring" and can be visited all year round. Temperatures are consistently mild. To fully enjoy the trails with pleasant weather and fewer crowds, we particularly recommend hiking in the spring (April to May), when the flora is most spectacular. Autumn hiking, from September to November, also offers excellent conditions with soft light and pleasant temperatures.

What gear should you pack?

Good preparation is key to enjoying your trip. Be sure to bring well-broken-in hiking boots, layered clothing to adapt to rapid weather changes, and sun protection. The nature of the terrain, which can be steep, makes hiking poles a good idea for certain routes. To ensure you don't forget anything, check out our day hike packing list.

Explore other horizons

Travelers who have enjoyed hiking the coastal and volcanic trails of Madeira are often captivated by other European islands and coastlines. You might, for example, enjoy the rugged paths of Crete, which blend ancient history with wild landscapes, or the colorful villages and cliffside trails of Italy's Cinque Terre. For another island experience, the volcanic landscapes of the Canary Islands or the flower-filled trails of the Azores could also appeal to you. If the allure of Portugal keeps you, our other hiking circuits on the mainland will introduce you to a different side of this charming country.

—  Very interesting itineraries that often take you along less-traveled trails. Transportation and hotels were impeccable. A few inconsistencies between the app and the roadbook. The map showing how to get to Portela from Porto da Cruz is missing. Overall, we’re thrilled with this trip!

—  Enjoyed time outside the lodging and a picnic

—  Madeira is a beautiful island and a fabulous playground for hikers. The scenery varies throughout the hikes and is breathtaking. The hikes are well organized, the app works well, and the route guide is well put together—except for the junctions between two hikes. Transfers between hikes are well organized with taxis that arrive on time, and our local contact was completely reliable, efficient, and accommodating. It’s a shame there were too many people on the paid hikes. The fact that only one transfer to or from the airport is provided, regardless of everyone’s arrival or departure times, is very regrettable and quite baffling. The hotels are very comfortable and very clean, but the meals included in the trip are bland. What a shame, when the local cuisine is so good!
